The incident happened during the second innings of the final when Arshdeep Singh came for his second spell in the 11th over of the innings.
Arshdeep, who had gone for only 4 runs in his first over of the match, was struck for back-to-back sixes by Mitchell.
Arshdeep then bowled a wide ball and followed that up with a wide yorker against Mitchell.
Mitchell could not get away from the yorker, and the ball went straight to Arshdeep in his follow-through. Frustrated with the outcome so far, Arshdeep threw the ball in anger and that hit Mitchell on his thighs.
That made Mitchell angry, and he went after Arshdeep with a verbal attack.
Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav went to Mitchell to apologise to him on behalf of his bowler as Arshdeep turned back to his bowling runup without even a flinch. Arshdeep might have to face punishment after the final is over. However, Arshdeep and Mithcell hugged eachother after the umpire intervened.
Earlier, India scored 255/5 in the first inning after Abhishek Sharma's 21-ball 52 Sanju Samson's 89 off 46 and Ishan Kishan's 54 off 25 deliveries. Shivam Dube also contributed with a quick 26 off 8 balls to help India finish strong.
Till the 11th over, New Zealand were 103/5 as India dominated with the ball in hand as well, with Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakravarthy taking wickets for the Men in Blue.
