INDW vs AUSW, 2nd ODI: Australia clinch series in Hobart as Georgia Voll’s century overpowers the World Champions

Australia Women clinched a 2-0 lead in the ODI series against India with a dominant victory at Bellerive Oval, Hobart. Georgia Voll starred with her second ODI century, scoring 101.

Australia Women have secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series after a commanding win over the current World Champions, India, at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Friday. A second ODI ton from Georgia Voll made light work of India’s competitive total as Australia chased down 252 with more than 13 overs remaining in the match.

India lost momentum after a solid start with the bat

Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian captain, won the toss and decided to bat first, and the openers Pratika Rawal and Smriti Mandhana gave them a solid start with the bat.

Mandhana played a nearly run-a-ball 31 off 37 before getting dismissed by Ashleigh Gardner when the score was 78/0 in the 17th over. Jemimah Rodrigues replaced her in the middle at No.3 but lost her wicket after a good-looking start of 11 off 15.

Rawal, meanwhile, played an anchor role, and just when she was thinking of putting a foot on the accelerator, she was run out in a horrific mix-up with captain Harmanpreet Kaur and had to return to the dressing room after a steady 52 off 81 balls.

India lost 5 wickets in 52 runs

From 78/0, India suddenly collapsed to 130/5 as Deepti Sharma (1) held out to deep midwicket against Alana King, followed by a brilliant catch by Beth Mooney off Nicola Carey to get Amanjot Kaur out on 13.

Although captain Harmanpreet Kaur tried to steady the ship from one end, Indian batters kept getting out from another end despite getting starts. Richa Ghosh (22 off 19) and Kashvee Gautam (25 off 34) got off to good starts but could not capitalise on that.

Eventually, Harmanpreet (54 off 70) also perished while going for a lofted shot in the 49th over. It was a quick 10 off 5 balls from debutant Vaishnavi Sharma that helped India reach 251/9 in the first innings. However, it looked like India were nearly 30-40 runs short on that pitch in Hobart.

The Phoebe Litchfield & Georgia Voll masterclass in the chase

The Australian chase began with a minor hiccup when captain Alyssa Healy, who is playing her last ODI series before retirement, fell early to the young Kashvee Gautam. But what followed after that did not give any hope to keep the series hanging in balance.

It was Phoebe Litchfield who punished every bad ball from the Indian bowlers and showcased her 360-degree game to give the Aussies an early advantage. Litchfield reached 50 off 42 balls and then launched an assault on Indian bowlers before getting dismissed by Kranti Gaud on 80 off 62 balls.

Meanwhile, Georgia Voll, playing with a maturity far beyond her years, reached her fifty in just 40 balls and looked determined to take Australia home with ease.

After adding 119 in partnership with Litchfield, she added another 82 runs to the total with Beth Mooney. Voll reached her second ODI ton in just 80 balls and was dismissed on 101 off Kashvee Gautam just when 30 runs were needed.

Although India were able to get Mooney and Annabel Sutherland out in quick succession, Voll's innings had already taken the game away from the Women in Blue. Ashleigh Gardner then remained unbeaten on 19 off 14 balls to hand the Aussies the ODI series against the current World Champions.
