Mohammad Amir's remarks on Babar Azam

An old video featuring former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir questioning Babar Azam's number-one ranking has resurfaced on social media. Although the video dates back to when Pakistan faced defeat against Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup 2023, fans have revived it in light of Pakistan's recent performance in the Asia Cup 2023, where they finished 4th in the Super 4 stage.

Babar Azam, the Pakistan skipper, has faced substantial criticism due to his recent batting failures and certain on-field decisions during losses to India and Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023.

At the outset of the Asia Cup, Babar Azam's splendid 151 against Nepal had propelled him to the top of the ICC ODI batsman rankings. However, his subsequent scores of 17 against Bangladesh, 10 against India, and 29 against Sri Lanka, coupled with Pakistan's losses in crucial matches, resulted in them missing out on the final of the continental tournament.

Babar has also faced substantial criticism for his inability to perform with the bat in high-pressure matches, often accumulating runs against weaker opponents.

In the old video that has resurfaced, Mohammad Amir, who has been rumoured to have had differences with Babar, is seen explaining that Babar's rankings will improve if he consistently plays all matches and scores runs, especially against weaker teams.

The video has reignited the debate: Does Babar Azam truly deserve the number 1 batsman ranking? Mohammad Amir offered his perspective.

"About ICC ranking, I will tell you. Firstly, ICC’s ranking changes every week. Second, when, for example, out of your team’s 40 matches, you will play all 40 matches, so you will score 25 in one game, 50 in another game, and 70 in another game. So you will automatically come in the ranking.

Why isn't Jos Buttler in the batsman ranking? Why isn't Quinton de Kock in it? Why isn’t Miller there in the ranking? Because when the B and C teams of opposition come, these guys don’t play. So when you are not playing matches, your points will decrease. If you [Babar Azam] are playing 40 out of 40 matches of your team, then you will surely come in the [top of] ranking."

In the context of the Asia Cup 2023, the Indian cricket team delivered a stunning performance that left defending champions Sri Lanka humbled on their home turf, securing their 8th title.

Mohammed Siraj emerged as the star of the Asia Cup 2023 final, where he orchestrated a mesmerizing seven-over spell that left Sri Lanka in complete disarray. Siraj's extraordinary 4-wicket over set the stage for India's historic triumph in the final.

Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the Indian team managed to bowl out Sri Lanka for a mere 50 runs and then effortlessly chased down the paltry target without losing a single wicket. Siraj's exceptional performance culminated in him achieving the fourth-best ODI bowling figures by an Indian, finishing with figures of 6 for 21.
