While cinema has the power to comfort the restless and stir excitement in the bored, there is an entire genre that is dedicated to spooking people and scaring them to the core. Horror films from across the world have takers, and the genre is one that has impressed countless people. Many filmmakers have tried their hands at the genre, and there have been iconic movies that have come out of it. But it is also the trickiest because one mistake in attempting to scare a viewer can turn into a laughing affair in no time. So, filmmakers making horror movies are already walking on a thin line. In India especially, the genre is supremely underexplored, and the horror-ex twist to it has pushed the process in the wrong direction for years now.

The West and a few other industries in the world, however, are making some very nuanced and good horror movies that respect their viewers and also scare them as they should. There are also sub-genres in the horror realm, and they vary from place to place. Some make social films where the horror is in the idea and not visual; there are movies where the ghost is not physical but in the shadows, and ones where the gore takes over and we cannot pass through it without covering our eyes. VROTT is a platform that delves into thrillers and scary movies from all over the world. There is a section dedicated to horror films, and you must explore them.

To make the job easier for you, we explored the Horror Films library on VROTT and found a few recommendations for you to watch over the weekend with your OTTplay Premium subscription. Read on and add them all to your watchlist for the coming days.

Cast: Niamh Carolan, Solange Sookram, and Jeremy Walmsley.

Director: John Barnard

Starting with a movie where John Bernard directed a mind-numbing story where a woman is in charge of an isolated city battling the plague of depression. Soon, depression takes over the town and turns the remaining residents into mindless zombie-like automatons. The movie doesn't have a ghost or a spirit, but humans, who are scarier than the ghosts. This is a movie where poor mental health becomes the ghost, and no one around is saved from it.

Post Mortem (2020)

Cast: Viktor Klem, Fruzsina Hais, and Judit Schell.

Director: Péter Bergendy.

In this Hungarian drama, the horror is not just about the ghosts that surround the story but also about the past, where the world has witnessed a World War and the Spanish Flu. A post-mortem photographer visits a haunted village, where he meets an orphan girl. The story unfolds in a very interesting way, dealing with two ghosts, one from the past and one that is of the past. There is so much intensity in this topic that it looks at the horrors of being in a time where human lives were lost and sacrificed as if they didn't matter.

Girl At The Window (2022)

Cast: Radha Mitchell, Ella Newton, and Karis Oka.

Director: Mark Hartley.

Ella and her mother move to a new town and settle in. Her classmates are being killed one by one. Meanwhile, she sees her neighbour and her mom coming closer. But his weird activities as he comes and goes at strange hours alarm Ella. She soon connects him to the murder and now believes that he is the serial killer who is killing her classmates. She is now on the investigation, and the tension is at its peak. The movie is so intense because the one scaring us is a serial killer, and you don't have to suspend a whole lot of disbelief to feel the outcome. This is something that can really happen around you.
