Cinephiles who can’t get enough of Bollywood works of the 2000s would certainly have a soft spot for Preity Zinta. The actress was a prominent figure in Bollywood works at the time, making a name for herself through her tackling of roles that were considered controversial and taboo at the time, mostly playing independent headstrong women who challenged societal norms.

Zinta, who made her debut back in 1998, established herself as a leading lady and had a string of releases in the decade that followed her debut. Although she has taken a step back from the industry since then, her memorable past performances have made her recognisable in the industry still.

As the actress turns a year old today, here are a few films where she stole the show with her conviction-filled performances.

Chori Chori Chupke Chupke

5.6
There are few subjects as taboo and controversial in Indian society as sex work and surrogacy. Chori Chori Chupke Chupke sought to address both these topics through its story. The film tells the story of a couple who decide to hire a prostitute named Madhu as a surrogate when the wife becomes infertile as a result of a miscarriage. Although the story of the film tends to sway into melodramatic territory, Zinta gives a powerful enough performance as Madhu to forgive the melodrama. Her raw portrayal, which nailed the character development of Madhu, was praised by critics and fans alike and her courage to essay such a controversial role was also appreciated.

This unconventional medical drama tells the story of father-son duo, Siddharth and Akash, who are doctors in a hospital they run and wish to expand. Their lives are disrupted by the arrival of Sonia, a wealthy young woman who promises to arrange funds for the hospital’s expansion on the condition that Akash leaves his beloved and marries Sonia instead. When a tragic turn of events leaves the hospital strapped for money, Akash is left to make a difficult decision. Zinta essays the role of the antagonistic Sonia, who is willing to go to any lengths to get what she wants. Although the film failed to wow critics, Zinta was applauded for her role.
