There's nothing like a good heist movie to jolt one out of the jadedness of a lazy weekend. With elaborate schemes, quick getaways and the inevitable snags when ‘things didn’t go as planned’, films centred on larceny give viewers a chance to be a part of something thrilling and exciting. But it puts up a formidable challenge for filmmakers as they need to make sure that their silver screen thieves are given air-tight plans that not even the most cunning audience members can poke holes in. All in all, the work that goes into a heist movie might be the same as an actual heist.

Ocean's Eleven

Oozing sophistication and style, the film has a fast-moving storyline that is engaging, to say the least.

Widows
Dealing with strong women, especially when they are wives of some of the most ruthless criminals in the country, is definitely not a good idea. Widows tell the story of how a group of women who, after the death of their spouses in a caper gone wrong, follow in their criminal husbands’ footsteps and plan to rob a politician, when a crime lord puts pressure on one of them to pay him back. The critically lauded thriller features some of the best talent Hollywood has to offer including Viola Davis, Daniel Kaluuya and Michelle Rodriguez. The cast’s powerful performance only adds to an already intriguing plot that is very well executed.

The Italian Job
Two wrongs may not make a right, but when it involves a robber robbing another robber, it definitely makes for a thrilling plot for a heist movie. A group of expert thieves are betrayed by a member in their group, who gets away with the loot after killing one of his teammates. A year after the incident, the survivors decide to take revenge and steal it back, culminating in one of the most important jobs they ever did, as this time it's not just business, it's also personal. This well made and acclaimed heist flick not only features some stellar performances and action sequences, but its elaborate plot is so well thought out that it is hard to poke holes in it.

Now You See Me
If anyone wonders what would happen if a group of expert magicians decide to use their craft for crime, watch the 2013 film Now You See Me. The first instalment in the series of films of the same name follows the story of a group of magicians who call themselves the four horsemen as they use their magical skills to pull off detailed heists while performing on stage, which leaves the authorities dumbfounded. But their luck seems to run out as an FBI agent refuses to let them get away with it. Not only does the film manage to expertly blend magic and larceny together, but it also features a shocking twist that not even the most skilled psychics will see coming.

Love seems to be something that can foil all in its path, even in risky and intricately planned bank robberies. A group of four childhood friends decide to team up to rob a bank, however, their successful heist becomes riddled with complications when one of them falls in love with a woman the gang had held hostage during the robbery. Lauded by fans and critics alike, The Town received high praise for its action-packed robbery sequences, fast-paced plot and performances by its stellar cast. Rife with some high tension moments, this heist thriller will definitely leave viewers at the edge of the seat throughout its run.

Logan Lucky
There may be only a few heist movies that are as fast-paced as Logan Lucky, with its central caper being organised on a race track, or rather, under it. Two brothers decide to rob a speedway blind, through the use of underground pneumatic tubes used to transport vast sums of cash. If this one-of-a-kind concept isn't enough to make viewers tune in to watch the film, then some powerful performances featuring some big Hollywood names like Daniel Craig would definitely do the trick. The film opened to rave reviews praising the incredibly fun atmosphere of the heist comedy and its brilliant direction.
