Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal premiered on Netflix on Jan. 26 & garnered a mixed bag of reactions. The leading males now reveal intriguing insights behind their Animal looks and shirtless scenes.
Animal premiered on Netflix on January 26, 2024, after a theatrical release on December 1, 2023, that garnered more than ₹ 653 crores worldwide on ₹ 100 crores budget. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Animal stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, and Tripti Dimri, among others. Despite extensive promotions, for the first time, the three leading males sat for an interview together with Anubhav Singh Bassi and Netflix.
When discussing their iconic looks in Animal, Ranbir Kapoor discussed how working on Animal was not as “irritating” as Shamshera, because he had a fake beard in it, which always irks his skin and mood while performing. He then pointed the spotlight at Anil Kapoor by saying that Anil Kapoor swears by a personal rule. He never puts on a false “daari” or beard for any role.
Even when Animal was offered to him, after everything (including money, as Kapoor joked) was finalized, Anil Kapoor and Sandeep Reddy Vanga sat down to plan his looks and makeup regarding the age range of 42 to 67 that he will portray as the powerful patriarch Balbir Singh.
His first condition was that he would neither don a wig, nor a fake beard, nor add any artificial white paint to his hair to look older. Anil Kapoor prefers going all natural, be it for a younger or older portrayal. He asserts this from experience as he only wishes to do justice to his role, and he knows that most fake wigs and beards look artificial and bad onscreen.
And he commended Bobby Deol’s look as the film’s ‘phenomenal’ villain Abrar for the same reason. Bobby Deol had also been training hard for his role at the gym with proper diet and training and was bulking up as the days to his shirtless scenes came closer. And this is when the chuckling began among the three as they revealed the fun, behind-the-scenes banter of the shirtless action sequence between Ranbir Kapoor and Bobby Deol.
Ranbir Kapoor admits, while laughing, that his trainers at the gym kept clicking his shirtless photos to track and appreciate his progress, as his portion of the shirtless action scene was shot two days earlier. The entire unit had clapped “jab hero ki shirt nikli,” revealed the Brahmastra star, “Par jab iski shirt nikli...” Ranbir Kapoor explained that when Bobby Deol took off his shirt during his part of that scene, both he and his trainer knew “hum toh gaye.”
