The romantic comedy Anyone But You, starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney in the leads, took India by storm upon its release in January 2024. The film's success was fueled by the sizzling hot on-screen chemistry between the two leads, which sparked a frenzy on social media. While Shakespeare's play centres on a young couple's marriage, the film draws inspiration from the secondary plot involving Beatrice and Benedick, two witty characters who avoid marriage. Through a series of comedic schemes arranged by their friends, they unexpectedly find themselves falling for each other. The film's lighthearted approach is evident in its use of direct quotes from the play and the characters' names - Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell).

Anyone But You's box office collection

According to a few US reports, Anyone But You has achieved the impressive feat of becoming the highest-grossing live-action Shakespeare adaptation ever, raking in $190 million, globally. However, It's important to note that the exceptional one is the animated film - The Lion King (2019), which collected $1.663 billion at the box office. Nevertheless, this achievement is a significant milestone for the film and its place in cinematic history.

Other Shakespeare's live-action adaptations

The other live-action versions of Shakespeare's plays are - Romeo + Juliet (1996) that collected $147.6 million, is adapted from Romeo and Juliet, 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) that collected $53 million, is adapted from The Taming of the Shrew, She's The Man (2006) that collected $57 million, is adapted from Twelfth Night, and West Side Story (2021) that collected $76 million, is once again adapted from Romeo and Juliet.

Anyone But You is expected to release on Netflix on April 21, 2024.
