Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom released last on December 22, 2023, and was instantly written off by many.
Not many films could survive the controversy and heat Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, aka Aquaman 2, was walking the path to release and beyond. A movie that had some or the other controversy attached to it since the very first announcement was released amid a lot of chatter around the behind-the-scenes drama that alleged a whole lot of things. The estimations had already written the film off, and there was not much hope attached. Even for the studio, it felt like a job they just wanted to get done with. However, turns out the movie has now become the highest-earning DC film of 2023.
Yes, there is a twist in the tale now, and it turns out that Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, aka Aquaman 2, has now started inching closer to $400 million, becoming the highest-earning DC movie of last year. As per a Comic Book Movie report, the movie has now managed to earn $396.2 crore at the global box office and has achieved a feat no one saw coming. It now stands ahead of Black Adam that had earned a total of $393 million when it wrapped up its theatrical run.
Estimations had written off Aquaman 2 already because of the controversies and negative buzz attached to it. The fact that the movie opened to a number much less than what was expected also made it somewhere sure that the movie would suffer to make ends meet. But turns out that is not the case, and the movie did have a good trajectory at the box office. Of course, not as good as the first part, but the movie has managed to stay afloat.
Aquaman 2 is a direct sequel to Aquaman that released in 2018. The movie went on to become the highest-earning DC standalone flick with a billion-dollar business back in 2018. The sequel was walking with a lot of pressure. The movie took the story of Atlantis ahead. While there was a lot of scope for improvement, and the movie felt like someone just did a rushed job to get done with it, there was some merit to the movie.
The most difficult question for almost all of the people involved with the franchise. While the new dawn at DCU has no mention of Aquaman in the confirmed lineup, the fact that the timeline Aquaman existed in has been completely scrapped by the new bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran. Which means the chances are bare minimum. Meanwhile, Jason Momoa had also said that the future doesn’t look very bright, which is very much confirmation that it isn’t happening.
