The internet had a field day following director Atlee's recent comments on his latest movie, Jawan. Starring Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role, Jawan was released to packed houses across the world earlier this month. The movie continues to scale new heights in terms of its box office performance and the craze around the movie seems to be showing no signs of slowing down. To cash in on the unprecedented reception for the movie, Atlee expressed his desire to send it to the Oscars.
"I would love to take Jawan to the Oscars. Let's see. I think Khan sir will watch and read this interview. I will also ask him over a call 'Sir, should we take this film to the Oscars?," Atlee told a leading newspaper recently.
And Atlee's comments sparked an intense debate dividing the internet. While some found it inspiring to see Atlee's confidence in his work and his ambition to push boundaries, many have trolled him over his desire.
If RRR can win the Oscars, why not?
Atlee's desire to see a full-fledged, brain-dead movie like Jawan making a mark at the Oscars may have sounded impossible a few years ago. However, after the historic win of director SS Rajamaouli's RRR earlier this year, an Indian production winning an Oscar seems more possible than ever before.
Like Jawan, RRR also was an out-and-out commercial entertainer and it defied the pre-covered notion of how Oscar-worthy movies must look and sound. Starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR in the lead roles, the movie crossed over Rs 1000 crore in worldwide ticket sales and won several prestigious international awards, including Golden Globes and an Oscar.
In light of the recent developments, many rooted for Atlee to pursue his Oscar ambition.
In the meantime, many have also slammed Atlee for his recent comments.
