Century Star Shivarajkumar’s next is his home production Bhairathi Ranagal, the prequel to the story of Mufti, in which his character was a gangster. To be released in theatres on August 15 for Independence Day, Bhairathi Ranagal, also directed by Mufti maker Narthan, will explore the circumstances under which the title character turns to a life of crime, albeit one in which he is a saviour to the people of his village.

In earlier leaked stills from the set of the film, it appeared that Shivarajkumar, as Bhairathi Ranagal, was in a lawyer’s attire, but this had not been confirmed by the team, until today. On the occasion of Ugadi, team Bhairathi Ranagal released a new poster, with Shivarajkumar kitted out as an advocate, against the backdrop of a court room, mentioning that Justice arrives on August 15.

The message accompanying the poster read, ‘This Independence Day, the colour of justice will be black”, which could imply that a gross miscarriage of justice is what prompts Bhairathi Ranagal to ditch a lawyer’s black robe and embrace a black dhoti instead, in his transition to becoming a dreaded gangster. This, say netizens, was an unexpected twist, given that Bhairathi was portrayed as someone who lost hope in the legal system early on.

Bhairathi Ranagal pairs Shivarajkumar with Rukmini Vasanth, while Bollywood actor Rahul Bose has been roped in as the chief antagonist . The film, produced by Geetha Pictures, has music by Ravi Basrur, and has set up a clash with Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 at the box office. Shivarajkumar had earlier said that the film would serve as both prequel and sequel, so, it remains to be seen if Narthan will also address what happens to Bhairathi after his incarceration.

The film will likely be Shivarajkumar’s second release for the year, after Karataka Damanaka. The actor, who was working on Bhairathi Ranagal and Arjun Janya’s directorial debut 45 simultaneously, is currently caught up with election campaigning for his wife, Geetha Shivarajkumar, who is contesting on a Congress ticket from Shivamogga. He is also expected to begin shooting for Rohit Padaki’s two-part gangster film Uttarakaanda with Dhananjaya in the lead from April 15.
