In less than a week, the first of the major Hollywood award nights will unfold at The Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Golden Globe Awards will take place on January 8, with live telecast set to begin at 6.30 am (IST). The 81st edition of the prestigious award event, which is being hosted by standup comedian Jo Koy, will be available to stream on Lionsgate Play in India. You can also access it on OTTplay Premium.

Unlike last year, when India had much to cheer what with RRR a favourite to win an award or two, this time around, there’s no such glory in sight for the country. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has a whopping 9 nominations, including acting nods for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as well as three in the Best Original song category. Also vying for some of the top honours are films like Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, Poor Things, etc., while shows like The Bear, Ted Lasso, Only Murders in the Building, Barry, The Last of Us, Succession, among others, are in the battle field of television.

Only Murders in the Building has four acting nominations, including Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, Martin Short and, of course, Meryl Streep, whose nod for Best Supporting Actress was her 33rd at the Golden Globe Awars. She has won nine so far and is a one of the strongest contenders in her category, although Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso could give her great competition. The lone non-film/series category is for standup comedy, with nominations for Trevor Noah, Ricky Gervais, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman and Wanda Sykes.

This is the first edition of the Golden Globe Awards since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization behind the event, was dissolved, following controversy around the lack of diversity and inclusion within its ranks. Eldrige Industries and Dick Clarke Productions have bought the Golden Globe asset.
