Gopalkrishna Deshpande had been making baby steps in Kannada cinema when he got his breakthrough role in Raj B Shetty’s Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana, as the police officer Brahmayya. Although he has chalked up a decent filmography since then, the actor says that he cannot pick and choose the roles he wants to do, which is also why he may be seen in characters that seem similar. The actor is playing a cop yet again in Shakhahaari, which is currently in theatres, and addressed his lack of choice as an artiste in an interview with Metrosaga.

“I do not have the luxury to be selective roles. I have to take up whatever comes my way. It is still early days for me in the industry. It is like joining a gym and doing all sorts of exercises to get the desired physique. Once you have the body you want, you can do targeted exercises,” said Gopal.

As for being a part of Shakhahaari, Gopal says that even though he has known Sandeep for nearly 5 years and wanted to work with him, he had had initial apprehensions about playing a police character yet again. But then Sandeep went ahead and sent Gopal the script and told him that Rangayana Raghu would be playing the central character, Subbanna. It is then that Gopal says he began imagining Raghu in the role and as he kept reading, the artiste in him became selfish about being a part of a journey that included artistes like Sujay Shastry, Vinay UJ, Nidhi Hegde, among others.

Gopal says that when Sandeep and his cinematographer Vishwajith get together, it is like having two rambunctious and jovial college boys who crack tons of jokes. So, when he saw that these funsters were making a very serious crime thriller, he wanted to know how they’d go about it and that is how he became a part of Shakhahaari.
