Even after four years of its release, Haseena Dillruba is still considered one of the most untamed and exciting romantic thrillers on Netflix. Its unique blend of burning passion, puzzling suspense, and dark comedic moments has solidified the movie’s reputation as a wild ride that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats till the end. After garnering massive viewership, Netflix is now gearing up for a sequel of the movie, titled Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, which is scheduled to release sometime soon in 2024.

Haseen Dillruba plot

A web of deceit unravels as Rani (Taapsee Pannu), a woman shrouded in suspense, fabricates a captivating tale of her loveless marriage with her husband Rishu (Vikrant Massey). Her cryptic words paint a picture of a life gone wrong, even as the police investigation tries hard to crack the murder case of her husband Rishu.

What happens in the end?

When the police failed to get any leads, they began to physically assault Rani to make her confess to Rishu’s murder. However, Rani kept denying it. Hence, the police use a polygraph test to detect her lies, but Rani very cleverly cheats the machine. She hides an iron nail in her shoe, which pierces her skin, making her heart beat faster. She tells a fake story that after Rishu saw (her lover) Neel come back from Delhi, he tells Rani to leave him and go with Neel. However, the police find the nail in her shoe and try the polygraph test again, and once again Rani successfully fools the machine and is finally free.

Did Rishu really die, or was it all his master plan?

Haseen Dillruba’s real twist lies at the very end of the movie. The last few minutes reveal that Rani and Rishu made up the whole murder case and Rishu’s demise story. The whole story that Rani told the police was masterfully taken from a fictional novel. This ending might please many, but it raises questions about the movie’s message, which is, can real love make you do this?

Despite the mental and physical abuse Rani suffered, her decision to stay with Rishu seems a troubling aspect of the movie. Despite the moral ambiguity, Haseena Dillruba is worth a watch for those who are seeking chilling thrillers with a touch of Bollywood romance and melodrama.
