The Woman in the Window, which is Netflix’s latest offering, follows an agoraphobic woman who spies on her neighbors and is witness to a crime that takes place in their home. The film helmed by Joe Wright stars Amy Adams as Anna Fox in the lead role.

If you have watched the film and are perhaps intrigued by the safehouse featured in it, here is how production designer Kevin Thompson built it from the ground up.

Thompson kept the main character, Anna, in mind while designing the safehouse. Her psychological condition and the storyline were the focus behind designing the place. Being agoraphobic, the house had to make Anna feel secure, and hence, it contained a continuous staircase, rather than one that was divided by posts on each floor. This was also done to give the house a sense of isolation, just like Anna.

If you notice closely, each floor of the house is also given a character. For instance, the rooms on the higher floors of the house looked poorly maintained and uninhabited. The house also had elements of her family - being separated from her husband and child.

The 19th-century house was constructed on a stage and broken down into five sets. The integral parts of the house were the stoop, the first floor, and the stairwell. They acted as an element of connectivity and were central to the film’s plot.

Now that you know the integral details of the house and its importance to the plot of the film, why not watch Woman in the Window again?
