Drive-Away Dolls released on February 23, 2024, and has slowly but steadily been gathering a decent box office collection. As for the film’s reception, the latest road trip comedy of creators Ethan Coen and his wife Tricia Cooke has received a mixed bag of reviews, with mostly negative ones from the critics and mostly positive ones from Twitter netizens.
Drive-Away Dolls is a queer road trip comedy that stars the talented likes of Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon, Colman Domingo, and Bill Camp in prominent roles. And Twitter could not help but compliment the leading pair of Jamie and Marian, essayed by Qualley and Viswanathan respectively, along with Pedro Pascal’s guest appearance.
The film is a hit among most Twitter users for its interesting premise, raunchy humor, as well as quirky and stylistic goofiness, including psychedelic visions of Miley Cyrus and custom-molded sex toys after famous public figures. Drive-Away Dolls is both sexy and funny with a heartwarming premise, sprinkled throughout with thrilling bits that add excitement of a different kind without raising our adrenaline levels.
Some Twitter users found multiple flaws in the film that according to them outweigh the good bits of the film. The seemingly forced psychedelic editing, silly, pulpy premise, and weak cinematography was complained by a few, but there were more in support of the film’s strengths than minor flaws and voiced the same.
Drive-Away Dolls follows lesbian friends Jamie and Marian go on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee to visit the latter’s aunt and catch a break from life. Jamie is currently suffering from a breakup with her girlfriend Sukie, due to the former’s infidelity, and was kicked out of the house.
Marian could do with loosening up in life instead of always donning sweaters to pubs and hiding behind the pages of Henry James. But a hilarious mistaken swap of rental cars, a severed head in dry ice, and a suitcase full of mysterious but important content later, the real action begins in Drive-Away Dolls
