Jigarthanda DoubleX was put on hold for 8 years; director Karthik Subbaraj makes an interesting revelation

Jigarthanda DoubleX, the period action-comedy film has hit the OTT screens after its excellent run in theatres. The Karthik Subbaraj directorial emerged as one of the most loved Tamil films of recent times and impressed both the audiences and critics. Interestingly, in a recent interview with Film Companion, director Karthik revealed that Jigarthanda DoubleX was planned exactly year after the release of the first installment of the franchise, Jigarthanda. However, the director waited for 8 years, to finally make the movie.

Jigarthanda DoubleX was put on the back burner for 8 years

In his interview with Film Companion, Karthik Subbaraj revealed that he developed a prequel idea to Jigarthanda in 2015, within a year of its release. The project was even set to start rolling, with leading man Raghava Lawrence and producer coming on board. Director Karthik even had the first half of the film ready, but there was only a vague idea of what the second half should be. However, the filmmaker had his doubts and felt that it is not the right plot for the Jigarthanda sequel.

So, he said No to the project, and put it on backburner for over 7 years. According to Karthik Subbaraj, he cannot start working on a film with just a vague idea. He prefers to have his complete script ready before he starts working on a project. Even though the filmmaker had no plans to revive the project, leading man Raghava Lawrence kept on asking him if he is planning to do Jigarthanda XL someday.

Eventually, after wrapping up the Chiyaan Vikram starrer Mahaan, Karthik Subbaraj started thinking about the Jigarthanda sequel once again. Then, the elephant and forest actors came into his mind, and he blended it with the theme of the film and finished the script. The director only started working on the film after he felt confident about the script. He believes that the delay helped the film in a big way, as it wouldn’t have been the same if it had been made in 2015.

Jigarthanda DoubleX on OTT

For those who have missed watching Jigarthanda DoubleX in theatres, the project had its OTT release on December 8, Friday, on the renowned platform Netflix. Along with Raghava Lawrence, the Karthik Subbaraj directorial features a stellar star cast including SJ Suryah and Nimisha Sajayan. The action comedy film is available for streaming in five languages, including Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.
