Kuberaa, the upcoming film which will have a multi-lingual release, stars Dhanush, Nagarjuna and others. Directed by Sekhar Kammula, who has already proven his mettle as a storyteller, we are just a day away from the release of Kuberaa, a film which will be a play between a beggar and a millionaire. It seems like a perfect window created for Kuberaa, given Tamil cinema is seeing a slump after Thug Life’s failure, and Telugu film Hari Hara Veera Mallu getting postponed. It is also crucial that Kuberaa wins big, given Dhanush’s first and previous Telugu film Sir, had solidified his position as a bonafide Telugu star, and Kuberaa winning big could just become a double-tier cake for him.
It took him about two years for Dhanush to have his second Telugu film after the 2023 Vaathi/Sir. This time, with Kuberaa on his hands, and confidence brimming on his face, Dhanush has explicitly gone all out to say that Kuberaa is a film that is closer to his heart and not to forget the praises he showered on Sekhar Kammula.
Now, with the film having quite a good pre-release buzz, and stars like Rashmika Mandanna and Nagarjuna already gracing Kuberaa, the pan-Indian-ess is already etched out there. And Dhanush is no less than a brand name that screams of quality. With Sekhar Kammula’s goodwill in Telugu, Dhanush’s finesse in acting (not to forget his Raanjhanaa fame), and Rashmika’s pan-Indian appeal in Hindi market, while Nagarjuna’s presence in Coolie hyping up in Tamil, Kuberaa seems to coming with a platter that will appeal for each language. Now, the only thing that has to work out is Kuberaa itself, and if that checks the box, then it is there is no stopping the film.
Kuberaa must win big for another reason, that being it could be the potential saviour of Tamil cinema, which has been seeing a dearth in good content. It has been a mixed bag of a year when star films have seen a drop, some potential ones faced with disappointment, and unevenness of what might work at the box office. So, at this time, Kuberaa’s win is not only crucial for Tamil Nadu, but can further solidify the film’s presence in 2025 calendar, given the next big release is Coolie in August, while the intermediate time will feature some quality films.
While the success of the film relies majorly on the content and how much it resonates with the audience, Kuberaa is casting a wide net, which now seems to be appealing to all languages. Now it must also make itself favourable for the pan-Indian audience, or make itself a massive blockbuster in one of the major languages, for it seals the deal for not only the stars, but also has the potential to prove that south can once again create the success formula. So, will the deity Kubera grace its blessings on the Dhanush-starrer? One has to wait and watch.
