Thalapathy Vijay's latest movie Leo is going steady in cinemas worldwide. Leo is just a few crores away from crossing the Rs 600 crore mark at the global box office. Based on its trends so far, the movie is on its way to overtaking the lifetime collection of Superstar Rajinikanth's previous blockbuster Jailer.
According to Cinetrak, Leo has raked in more than Rs 596 crore from its worldwide ticket sales in just 18 days. In the meantime, Jailer took about 25 days to gross Rs 594 crore globally. The Thalapathy Vijay starrer also breached the Rs 400 crore mark at the domestic box office in less than three weeks, while the Rajinikanth starrer took about 25 days to achieve this box office feat in India.
Leo is doing exceptionally well in overseas markets, with its total collection in foreign locations already surpassing Rs 194 crore. Not only has it become the biggest hit in Vijay's career, but it also seems to have the potential to become the highest-earning Tamil cinema globally in 2023.
So far Jailer is at the top of the box office pyramid with over Rs 600 crore in ticket sales. Leo is expected to maximise its box office gain during the Diwali holiday.
Producer Lalit Kumar of Seven Screen Studio earlier revealed that Leo will retain more than 200 screens in Tamil Nadu alone during the festival season. Leo is expected to hold its own against other new releases, including Karthi's Japan and director Karthik Subbaraj's Jigarthanda DoubleX are set to hit the screens on November 10.
Director Mani Ratnam's previous blockbuster Ponniyin Selvan 1 created a new box office milestone by raking in Rs 200 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. It remains to be seen whether Leo can outearn it.
