It’s been just over a day since the hit Malayalam survival thriller Manjummel Boys dropped on OTT and social media is abuzz with words of praise for director Chidambaram’s adaptation of the real-life incident that occurred way back in 2006. While the film was a commercial success and found audiences in different parts of the country, even though it was dubbed in Telugu and Tamil only, following its OTT release, Manjummel Boys has found even more love.

#ManjummelBoys has been trending since the film dropped on Disney+ Hotstar, including versions with Kannada and Hindi audio. Director Chidambaram’s simplistic yet technically sound approach, the cinematography by Shyju Khalid, as well as composer Sushin Shyam’s background score have been hailed as outstanding, with many stating that the film defines the true meaning of friendship.

Amid all this outpour of love for Manjummel Boys, interestingly, many audience members are calling out one scene in particular and hailing it as the best transition scene ever. (Spoilers ahead) What begins as a scene of a group of young kids taking a dip in a waterbody, has a rather shocking ending, which netizens say is a peak ‘cinema’ moment – seamless and unexpected.

Manjummel Boys follows a group of friends from a small town called Manjummel in Kochi, who take off on a trip to Kodaikanal. While there, they decide to venture out and explore a part of the mountain’s cave system with restricted access. Flouting rules comes with consequences, they soon find out, as one of them slips and falls into a part of the caves known as the Devil’s Kitchen, from where there is no coming back. Or is there?

Released in February, Manjummel Boys is currently the highest grossing Malayalam film of 2024. Its ensemble cast includes Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Ganapathi, Lal Jr, Deepak Parambol, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Arun Kurian, Chandu Salimkumar, Khalid Rahman, among others. Made at a reported Rs 20 crore budget, Manjummel Boys has made an estimated Rs 240 cr theatrical revenue.
