Mark Antony is one of the biggest underdog success stories of 2023. Starring Vishal and SJ Suryah in the lead roles, many didn't have high hopes for the movie. However, all naysayers were proved wrong following its release.
After a successful theatrical run, Mark Antony made its OTT debut earlier this week . The movie is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
While the movie may have struck a chord with theatre-going audiences, it has seemingly not resonated with many OTT audiences.
Mark Antony gets mixed reviews
Some have voiced their disappointment, with a few even terming it as an "overrated" movie. "Such an overrated.. I kept my expectations high due to a tremendous theatrical response. But now I feel like ithuku yen da antha Kuvu kuvuninga..," wrote a Twitter user, while discussing the movie.
Even the critics of the movie can't help but praise SJ Suryah's over-the-top performance as a flamboyant gangster. "Exactly, very exaggerated. Other than SJ Surya's excellent performance in the second half (that is too enjoyable with the theatre crowd), this film is not worth this hype," said another user.
However, some seem to agree that it was a bit unfair to judge the movie by watching it from the comfort of one's home. The argument is that Mark Antony was designed for a fun theatrical experience, which it seems to have achieved. "Most of the movies are getting -ve reviews after getting OTT release because most of the +ve reviews are based on the theatrical experience that’s unbeatable!," reasoned a user on X.
Vishal, however, seems to be happy about the response Mark Antony is garnering in the OTT space. Recently, he expressed his excitement and gratitude after it became one of the top choices of the subscribers on the platform. "Happy to see #MarkAntony killing it in Ott platform too. Trending no 1 in Amazon Prime. Enjoy the unlimited entertainment, especially my favourite Silk Smitha scene in your own homes now. God Bless," he tweeted.
Mark Antony is written and directed by Adhik Ravichandran. The movie revolves around a time-travelling telephone invented by a mad scientist. And it falls into the hands of a timid mechanic who uses it to stop his father from killing his mother in the past. But, his life changes when he learns the truth about his father.
Mark Antony also stars Suneel, Selvaraghavan, Ritu, Abhinaya, Kingsley and Y.G.Mahendran.
