Nithya Menen found herself at the centre of a controversy when a statement, allegedly from her, circulated on social media. In the controversial statement, Nithya allegedly revealed instances of harassment by a leading Tamil actor.

It sparked a huge debate on social media with many trying to identify the unnamed actor. The news raised concerns about workplace safety for women, with prominent figures like Chinmayi Sripaada expressing their views.

Nithya's firm rebuttal

Nithya Menen, however, has rubbished the rumours. She has lashed out at a section of media that created this lie and helped spread it. In a clarification posted on her Instagram page, Nithya expressed her dismay over the state of journalism. "It's very sad that certain sections of journalism have come down to this. I urge you - Be Better than this ! #stopfakenews," she said.

Nithya's demands accountability on social media

She also identified the social media handles that spread this misinformation and demanded more accountability. "We are all here for such a short period of time . It always surprises me how much wrong we do to each other :) I point this out today because only accountability stops bad behaviour . Be better humans," she added.

A trend of malicious fake news

Nithya was the latest celebrity to fall victim to such malicious fake news in the film industry. Recently, Sai Pallavi also faced baseless and unverified information. An image featuring Sai Pallavi with director Rajkumar Periaswamy was manipulated and presented out of context, suggesting that they had a secret wedding ceremony. Sai Pallavi was compelled to issue a statement to counter the misinformation, expressing her dismay at such actions that cause discomfort and stress.

"Honestly, I don’t care for Rumours but when it involves friends who are family, I have to speak up. An image from my film’s pooja ceremony was intentionally cropped and circulated with paid bots & disgusting intentions. When I have pleasant announcements to share on my work front, it’s disheartening to have to explain for all these jobless doings. To cause discomfort like this is purely vile!," she wrote on her X account.
