It's peak holiday season in the West now, and Hollywood studios are busy making sure that they earn the most profit from it. For Warner Bros., this turned out to be a very interesting year, as they had not one or two but three major releases in theatres during the holiday season. Be it Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, aka Aquaman 2, releasing right when holidays were about to begin, Wonka, which has been managing to draw an audience for a while and is actually an apt holiday season release, or another such project, the musical adaptation The Color Purple.

All three movies raced to earn big box office collections for Warner Bros. on Christmas Day, and now the reports for the same are out. While Aquaman 2 had a whole lot of buzz attached, and Wonka was already being loved for the warm vibe that it reflected and the positive critical acclaim in the kitty, it is The Color Purple that has come out victorious. Yes, you read that right. Even Jason Momoa and Timothee Chalamet together couldn’t defeat Fantasia Barrino.

The Box Office Haul

Released on December 25, 2023, The Color Purple earned $18.15 million at the domestic box office on Christmas Day. However, this is much beyond what Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom and Wonka earned. The Jason Momoa-starrer managed to earn $10.6 million, and the Timothee-starrer earned $10.3 million, standing in the third position. However, The Color Purple also had the upper hand in terms of release as it was the first day for the movie, and the other two were already running in the theatres.

The Records

These numbers are the biggest for Warner Bros. after Sherlock Holmes, which has earned $24.6 million. With $18.15 million, The Color Purple has pushed out Les Misérables on the list of the top 10 biggest Christmas Day earners. The list also includes Aquaman (2018), Avatar: The Way Of Water, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

While Wonka has earned $257.1 million globally and has impressed a decent number of people, Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, however, has only managed to earn $118.4 million yet, even with two extra days added to its first weekend. It was released on Thursday in some parts of the world. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more on this and everything else in the world of streaming and films.
