Dune has for a long time now, been considered by filmmakers as a project to stay away from. Always an ambitious project, this adaptation has been the cause of despair for proven filmmakers in the past. But with the technical growth cinema has reached today, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve seems to have gotten it right this time.

The film, which was considered one of the best movies of the year, received 10 nominations at this year’s Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Dune has now come out victorious, winning Oscars for Best Sound, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, and Best Cinematography.

The science-fiction blockbuster is based on Frank Herbert's 1965 novel, which is regarded as one of the most important books of the twentieth century and is credited to have inspired many of the finest films ever made.

Popular filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky tried to adapt the book in the 1970s but eventually dropped the project after a constantly growing budget. David Lynch, another noted filmmaker, finished filming the adaptation, but it eventually bombed in theatres.

Dune is a mythic and emotionally-packed hero's journey about Paul Atreides, a clever and gifted young man born with a tremendous destiny beyond his comprehension, who must travel to the universe's most perilous planet to preserve the future of his family and people.

The movie also received an eight minute standing ovation from the crowd, following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The movie also stars Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

Dune, which is the first part of a two-part cinematic journey, is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
