Actor and model Poonam Pandey and her spouse Sam Bombay are facing legal trouble. A ₹100-crore defamation case has been filed against the two over Poonam's fake death stunt earlier this month , according to a Times of India report. Here's what we know so far.

What's the case against Poonam Pandey?

As per the report in The Times of India, a person named Faizan Ansari has allegedly lodged a complaint with the Kanpur police. Faizan has apparently stated in the First Information Report (FIR) that Poonam and Sam had planned to stage her death, downplayed the gravity of cancer, and hurt the emotions of people. He asked to have them both taken into custody and brought before the court. Faizan was quoted as saying, "Poonam Pandey and her husband Sameer Bombay have fabricated a false conspiracy of death."

He also felt outraged at the insensitivity with which the celeb couple trivialised not only a serious illness like cervical cancer, but also caused hurt to the families of those suffering from this ailment as well as those who have lost their loved ones to the disease, including those in the Hindi film industry. Faizan Ansari also stated in the same report that he is suing them for ₹100 crore.

What was Poonam Pandey's cervical cancer death hoax about?

For those who are unaware, Poonam made waves on February 2, when she posted on her official Instagram profile claiming that she had passed away from cervical cancer. Her management also informed publications that she had passed away. But Poonam made a surprise appearance on Instagram the following day, claiming that she had staged her own demise to raise awareness of cervical cancer.

She declared, "I am alive," in an Instagram video. Cervical cancer did not claim my life. Regretfully, I am unable to make that statement on the countless numbers of women who have lost their lives to cervical cancer." She continued discussing the illness. Poonam commented, "I feel compelled to share something significant with you all - I am here, alive," along with the video. Though it didn't take my life, cervical cancer has sadly taken thousands of women's lives due to a lack of awareness about treatment options.”

What led Poonam Pandey to resort to such an inhuman stunt?

Poonam Pandey pulled off this stunt a day after the union government announced about the plan to add the HPV vaccination to the nation's immunisation schedule for females between the ages of 9 and 14. The All India Cine Workers Association also demanded to file an FIR against Poonam for the stunt.
