Ramana Avatara is a film that’s been in the works for quite a few years. Announced way back in November 2018, with Rishi, Danish Sait and Raj B Shetty in main roles, the film has, since then, had a change of cast. While Rishi was still the leading man, Anirudh Acharya took up the role meant for Danish and Arun Sagar stepped in for Raj. The ladies, Pranitha Subhash and Shubra Aiyappa, remained the same, as the film faced delays, including during the pandemic and is now, finally set for a theatrical release.

Ramana Avatara will be in theatres on May 10, in the run-up to which the team just released its trailer. An earlier teaser had hinted at Rishi playing Rama, a guy set on stopping the labour drainage from his hometown. He would lead the charge to get them to stay back. There were also glimpses of romance with Shubra Aiyappa and Pranitha. Turns out, that’s not all that Ramana Avatara is about. There’s also the mystery of why Pranitha is abducted and what Rama has to do to ensure her freedom. None of this, though, is presented as heavy-duty drama and is, instead, laced with rib-tickling situational comedy, making it an interesting watch.

Speaking to OTTplay moments before heading to the trailer launch, Rishi had said that what director Vikas Pampapathi has presented is a feel-good fun entertainer. “Don’t go looking for intellectually stimulating stuff. Ramana Avatara is only meant to be a fun ride. This has always been the promise and we hope we’ve lived up to that,” he said.

Rishi, who made his Telugu debut with the web series Shaitaan, is currently busy with two films there, one as a leading man and another as antagonist, while back home he has Rudra Garuda Purana, a thriller in which he plays cop again.
