Irish actor Andrew Scott, who is famous for Sherlock (2010), Modern Love (2019-2021), and recently released All of Us Strangers (2023), is ready to captivate you with his charm and charisma as Tom Ripley in the upcoming series, Ripley. The psychological-thriller is the series adaptation of Matt Damon and Jude Law’s film, The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). The story of Ripley is based on Patricia Highsmith’s namesake novel.
The most interesting part about Ripley is its black and white cinematography. The trailer shows Andrew Scott getting hired by a business tycoon to track down his son Dickie Greenleaf, who shockingly vanishes from Italy. While getting introduced to Dickie's lavish lifestyle and his beautiful girlfriend Marga Sherwood. Of Course it is expected Scott will be greedy and won't want to leave the privilege at any cost. Soon he gets involved in some heinous crimes, and ultimately murders someone.
Though previously the teaser gave the viewers some hints, in the official trailer, Andrew Scott looks highly promising with his vindictive nature and stunning power of convincing and scamming people around. Despite being limited to eight episodes, the series is supposed to show the story of Patricia Highsmith’s novel elaborately, unlike Matt Damon's film.
Written and directed by Oscar-winning Steven Zaillian, Ripley is full of jealousy, crime, lies, scams, and mostly highlights the life of a con artist. The teaser and trailer confirmed that the entire series will be shown in black and white footage, which will enhance the 1950s and 60s era, as author Patricia’s novel was published in 1955. The trailer proves that the series will hopefully focus on the exact story of the novel.
However, the one major character of Peter Smith-Kingsley creates quite speculations, as it has not been shown elaborately in both the teaser and trailer. According to the novel, Smith-Kingsley befriends Ripley in Venice. The trailer offers little hints, but nothing more than that. This has led viewers to wonder if the series will follow the book's portrayal or create a more significant role for Smith-Kingsley, perhaps even a romantic entanglement with Ripley, as seen in the film adaptation.
Apart from Andrew Scott as Ripley, the thriller series also features Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf and Dakota Fanning as Marga Sherwood. Matt Damon's 1999 film received a whopping five-Oscar nominations at the 72nd Academy Awards in 2000.
The eight-episode Ripley series is coming soon on April 4, 2024, only on Netflix.
