SS Rajamouli’s RRR, starring Ram Charan and NTR Jr, has already gone on to set new box office records within a week of its release. The big budget period film, which has earned over Rs 500 crore since it hit theatres worldwide on March 25, is also in line to break the records set by Rajamouli’s previous film Baahubali 2 in Kerala.
While on Monday, most theatres in the State were shut due to the trade union strike, shows resumes on Tuesday and the film’s Kerala distributor Shibu Thameens tweeted that the movie would go on to break Baahubali 2 and Baahubali’s records in the Kerala box office in the coming days.
On Tuesday, the producer-distributor took to his Twitter to share that the movie was booked to full houses in theatres playing the film in Kerala. “Happy to hear from each exhibitor in Kerala that in the coming days, it will break SS Rajamouli sir’s own previous Baahubali record,” he tweeted, adding that the theatres are also equipped to screen the 3D version of the movie that was made on a budget exceeding Rs 550 Cr.
Baahubali 2 holds the opening-day record for an other-language movie in Kerala, with it grossing Rs 6.8Cr from theatres when it released in 2017. RRR could only earn Rs 4 crore from Kerala box office on its opening day, but it was building up momentum over the weekend, with the film releasing in 500+ screens in the State.
Baahubali 2 also holds the record for the highest-grossing other-language film with a lifetime earning of Rs 78 Cr from the Kerala box office. It remains to be seen if RRR, which also has Ajay Devgn, Samuthirakani, Alia Bhatt, Ray Stevenson and Shriya Saran in pivotal roles, will have the legs to beat that record. Reports suggest that the Kerala distribution rights for the movie was purchased by Shibu Thameens for a record price, exceeding Rs 10 crore.
