Society of the Snow debuted on Netflix on January 4, 2024, after enjoying limited theatrical release in the United States, United Kingdom, and Uruguay. The Spanish-language film has won over viewers and netizens with its touching and authentic portrayal, realistic scenes and sensitive handling of a traumatic accident.

The records Society of the Snow has stealthily swept over

The film has been considerate of the survivors as well and was based on Pablo Vierci’s eponymous novel, who was a classmate of the survivors. The film has become the most successful non-English film in its strong opening weekend, with 55.8 million hours streamed by viewers.

Society of the Snow also became one of the most highly viewed and trending film of Netflix upon its premier, with 22.9 million views, following in the shadow of Netflix’s hit Spanish thriller Nowhere. It has already surpassed Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon in terms of the number of hours streamed and is on equal footing with David Fincher’s The Killer.

Based on the fact that the Society of the Snow was made on a budget of €60 million (approx. $65.6 million), while The Killer and Rebel Moon were created on budgets of $166 million and $175 million, respectively, JA Bayona’s masterpiece has done pretty well and is sure to break more records.

What is Society of the Snow about?

Society of the Snow is a gritty yet stirring survival story that is based on the real-life plane crash that happened in 1972 when a flight, heading to Santiago in Chile for a series of rugby matches, met with a tragic accident. Flight 571, carrying the local Old Christian rugby team players and their family members crashed in the Andes, killing more than ten passengers on impact. Of the remaining, only 16 survived, making it back home.

In a year when blockbuster films like Oppenheimer, Barbie, and Killers of the Flower Moon hit the screen and now contest for nominations at the Oscar, a modest cinematic venture that features the best plane crash scenes till date, has scooped more Oscars shortlist nominations than Oppenheimer.

Society of the Snow has scored 4 shortlist Oscar nominations in Visual Effects, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, and Best International Feature Film, while Oppenheimer stands at 3, Martin Scorsese’s 2023 hit bagged 4, and Barbie led the Oscars 2024 shortlist with 5 nominations in the ten declared categories.

It is expected that the film will at least bag an Oscar in the Best International Feature Film after being declared among the final contenders for the award on January 23, 2024.
