The movie, helmed by Maju, also has Grace Antony, Ananya and Alencier Ley Lopez in lead roles
Even as there are strong rumours that OTT platforms are not looking at picking Malayalam films for direct-to-streaming releases, Sony LIV has been an exception with the streaming giant dropping at least one Malayalam film a month. The latest in this list is Sunny Wayne’s Appan.
The streaming platform has reportedly bagged the OTT rights for this film, which also has Alencier Ley Lopez, Ananya, Grace Antony and Pauly Valson. The dark comedy-drama revolves around a toxic patriarch, essayed by Alencier, and the ripple effect it has on his family and those around him.
The movie, which is co-written by Maju and R Jayakumar, also has Radhika Radhakrishnan and Anil K Shivaram in pivotal roles. The film is set in the high ranges of Kerala and has Sunny Wayne playing the character of Alencier’s son, who decides to go against his dad after suffering enough of his taunts.
Maju in a previous interview had said that every character in the film is grey and goes through an array of complex emotions. The four female protagonists – essayed by Grace, Ananya, Pauly and Radhika – have different personalities, said the filmmaker in an interview with Cinema Express.
While Ananya has a new-gen personality and wants to leave the home as soon as possible, Grace’s character has her dad’s qualities. “All four women find a common ground due to their past,” he said.
The movie, which was shot during the pandemic, had a preview last year and many had praised its making. Appan marks Maju’s second directorial after French Viplavam, which also had Sunny Wayne in the lead. The actor’s latest release was Jijo Joseph’s Adithattu, which had him showcasing what is arguably his best performance yet. Sunny played the role of a fisherman who is on pins and needles during a three-day fishing journey in the thriller, which also has Shine Tom Chacko in the lead.
