Maybe more famous as Princess Diana from the fourth season Netflix’s hugely popular historical drama television series The Crown, but award-winning stage and screen actress Emma Corrin’s role as the protagonist of the 2022 film Lady Chatterley’s Lover was also widely appreciated. An adaptation of DH Lawrence’s frequently banned 1929 erotic novel of the same name, the movie managed to stir the pot this time around too. But again, these are roles that are considered ‘very feminine’. Speaking during an interview recently, Emma expressed her views on nonbinary roles.

“There aren’t a lot of nonbinary parts out there. We need to be supporting queer writers and developing projects and welcoming these narratives into the creative space,” she told Vanity Fair

She also admitted that for her, being nonbinary is a very fluid space, where it’s not a rejection of femininity or masculinity, it’s sort of an embrace of both. “My experience on earth has been a female one, up until recently, and I still love all those parts of me. It’s interesting that I’m not offered male parts, but I would equally be drawn to that! I suppose it’s also what the industry sees you as, and I think, hopefully, that is shifting. The beauty of acting is taking on a character that doesn’t necessarily have to be completely in tune with your own experience. It’s sort of a way to explore. But I would love to play nonbinary, new parts, male parts. Anything, as long as it’s right,” the actress elaborated.

A while ago, Emma came out as nonbinary on social media. She also publicly changed pronouns on Instagram to ‘they/them’. Speaking about taking that decision, the actress told the magazine, “Naively, maybe, it took me aback how much hate I got for that. It was quite a reality check. But for a lot of people, it did help. Especially, around conversation of gender and stuff, it does help a lot of people to see someone living as a nonbinary person in the world. I know how much other people’s accounts helped me, that’s my motivation for keeping my social media at the moment.”

About her upcoming work, Emma is all set to co-star with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the third instalment of action-adventure film Deadpool. Although not much has been revealed about her character yet, she will be seen as the villain opposite Ryan’s mercenary and Hugh’s Wolverine. Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 is slated to release in September next year.

Ryan took to Twitter to welcome Emma to the team. “New addition to the family! The Deadpool family, for clarity. Which is just like a real family except with less swearing…. Welcome, Emma Corrin!”, he wrote.
