In the last couple of weeks, director Gururaj Kulkarni and the team of his upcoming legal thriller The Judgement have been talking about the film and its making. Led by Crazy Star Ravichandran, The Judgement is coming to theatres on May 24, in the run-up to which, the filmmaker just dropped the film’s trailer.

The pursuit of freeing an innocent man

As was the case with the earlier teaser, Gururaj has cut a trailer that offers very minimal information, but highlights the cast and the basic idea that it is going to be more of a courtroom drama. Ravichandran plays a successful yet slightly hot-headed advocate, whose error of judgement lands an innocent man in jail. How he works around the legal system to get the man his well-deserved freedom is what the film is about, Gururaj had said earlier.

The Judgement also stars Lakshmi Gopalswamy as an opposing lawyer, a role with gravitas, which she was more than happy about. Meghana Gaonkar plays Ravichandran’s wife, while Diganth is the guy who lands in jail, and Dhanya Ramkumar, as his love interest and the person spearheading his crusade for justice.

After the teaser of The Judgement came out, many netizens felt that it was similar to the Malayalam film Neru, starring Mohanlal in the lead, with Priya Mani, the lawyer opposing him. While Gururaj admitted that there could be perceived similarities given that much of the narrative takes place in a court of law, The Judgement, unlike Neru, is not only about emotional story-telling. Instead, it is just as much about law enforcement and the deliverance of justice.

The film’s ensemble cast also includes Prakash Belawadi, TS Nagabharana, Balaji Manohar, Sujay Shastry, Rekha Kudligi, Roopa Rayappa, Seetha Kote and Ravishankar Gowda, among others. The film has music by Anoop Seelin, while PKH Das has handled the cinematography. Grururaj, whose first tryst with cinema was as one of the producers of the thriller Last Bus, later made the transition to filmmaker with Amruth Apartment, starring Urvashi Goverdhan and Tarak Ponnappa in the lead.
