What is it about Unlocked: A Jail Experiment?

In a 6-week program, the Pulaski sheriff Eric Higgins is ready to see the reactions of the prisoners with this initiative. Higgins wants to change the detention facility and the jail’s poor living condition. In this program, the prisoners will be responsible for their every doings among themselves and also others. Higgins’ aim is to encourage more support and engagement.

The whole 6-week program will be showcased with every detail in this new Netflix docu-series. The trailer exhibits some prisoners discussing a particular prisoner’s ruining the initiative. Some are seen discussing the huge opportunity to reconnect with their family and have the freedom to meet them. The one-minute-forty-six-second video also tells that inmates will be rewarded with more freedom and opportunities for their good behaviours.

Last week, Eric Higgins told People magazine that despite several difficulties, his whole team will be doing this program to create a safe environment inside the jail. He believes that the journey will not only change the lives of individuals, but will also challenge society’s views on rehabilitation. Higgins also revealed that Lucky 8 TV Inc. agreed to pay their office $1000 per day for filming.

Netizens' reactions

However, netizens are seen to have several doubts on the docu-series. While some commented on social media that Unlocked: A Jail Experiment can't be called a ‘documentary’ actually. Instead it's like a reality show designed to create scenarios and sensationalise jail. They even have doubts to call it an ‘experiment’ either, considering that once the cameras quit rolling, everyone will be sent back to standard lock ups. Some netizens even thrashed the idea of experiment, saying that prisoners are humans too, and urged to fire sheriff Eric Higgins.
