Playing against a No.1 player is never easy, especially when this person is in top form. That’s the scenario that played out for Coco Gauff in her semi-final match at the Italian Open 2024 in Rome. She was pitted against the Polish Iga Swiatek, who, in turn, made quick work of her challenger, in a match that lasted a little under 2 hours.

Swiatek who has not dropped a set in the tournament, continued this streak, dispatching Gauff 6-4 6-3 and sealing a spot in Saturday’s final. She will meet the winner of the match between Danielle Collins and Aryna Sabalenka. This was the 11th head-to-head contest between Swiatek and Gauff, with the former taking her record to 10:1 against the latter.

Two-time Italian Open winner Swiatek is the clear favourite to win this year too and then head into the French Open, also a clay court tournament. The Italian Open women’s single final will be played on May 18. In India, Sony Sports is the broadcast partner, with SonyLIV the streaming destination, although the platform does not provide live coverage of all matches. On May 16, the only Italian Open matches on the streamer are the pending 2 men’s singles quarter-finals.

Speaking after the match, Swiatek acknowledged that she’s still a long way from a won and, hence, has a lot of hard work to do. “I am just going to play as best tennis as possible in the final,” she said, adding that both Danielle Collins and Aryna Sabalenka are great players, meaning that she’s got her work cut out for her.

In the men’s draw, Alejandro Tabilo will play Alexander Zverev, while Tommy Paul will take on the winner of the encounter between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nicolas Jarry. The finalists will then clash on May 19 for the title.
