House Mates actor Darshan: Sivakarthikeyan anna liked the screenplay and ideology of the film

House Mates is an upcoming Tamil horror fantasy film directed by T. Raja Vel. The film stars Darshan, Kaali Venkat and others, scheduled to release on August 1.

After the successes of films like Kudumbasthan, Tourist Family, Madras Matinee, Paranthu Po, Maaman, and the recently released Thalaivan Thalaivii, it is evident that the Tamil cinema audience has been favouring more family-centric and relatable stories. In line with this is the upcoming film House Mates a fantasy drama which will have elements of horror entering into the lives of middle-class families.

Actor Darshan, who was seen in supporting roles in films like Thunivu and Kanaa, plays the main lead along with Kaali Venkat. Speaking about House Mates, he says, “We had more action-oriented films coming together, that now people are accepting more feel-good films these days. All these films talk about relatability, and I hope they accept House Mates. Even this is a feel-good film, but also has a fantasy element, so there is extra excitement.”

House Mates is directed by T. Raja Vel, who has also written the film. Darshan says that he has completely relied on the writing to portray his character. “It is the way we can process an emotion or convey a scene. I had gone to acting classes, and it helped me to get out of my shyness,” she adds.

Having acted in supporting roles in Thunivu and Kanaa, and then doing a lead co-starring Kaali Venkat, Darshan says that Kanna was an important project in his career. “It was my debut professionally when as I did a small role in Rajini Murugan. Then, I did Thumbaa in which I had little more screen space. After that, due to lockdown, I did not have much but I took part in Cooku With Comali show which took me to wider audience. Many people began to recognise me, and after that I got Thunivu. My character became pivotal for the story, and I am Ajith sir fan.”

It was after this he got House Mates for which Darshan says that felt a little more responsibility entrusted with him. “I just want to keep bettering. I wanted to hold the screen presence and I keep enquiring with both director and cinematographer if it is working out. So, confidence is the key.”

Darshan says that House Mates is a beautiful family entertainer which can be related to middle and low-middle class family. “When an IT employee asks hand of a girl he likes, her family says that he has to own a house. When he finally gets house and marries the girl, their neighbour is played by Kaali Venkat. Something happens between these two families and the conflict is a fantasy moment. That ends on a light-hearted, emotional moment.”

As an upcoming actor, Darshan says that social media is an important and key element in today’s times. Actors entered the industry through auditions, short films, and now through social media, he says, “Now anybody can do a reel, and that is different and difficult going into the sets is different. So, you need to do some preparation for that, otherwise you cannot sustain. One has to be unique to sustain in the industry. Anyone can come to audition and enter the cinema, but they have to learn acting to work out.”

House Mates is presented by Sivakarthikeyan under his production banner. Even as Darshan knows the actor through mutual friends, he says that Sivakarthikeyan wanted to watch the film. “He liked the screenplay and ideology of House Mates. It is not a normal horror fantasy film, but has some relatability without getting complicated."

Concluding the conversation that he wants to try all the genres, and that he is confident about House Mates, Darshan says his next is with Seththumaan director Tamizh, co-starring Darshana Rajendran.
