Aaryan: The film follows a disgruntled writer who takes a live show hostage, announcing five planned murders, with the first victim being himself

Aaryan is the new Tamil film which is available for streaming on Netflix. The film is headlined by actor Vishnu Vishal, who has also produced the film. Available in multiple languages, Aaryan is a crime thriller. Much different from what Vishnu Vishal’s earlier crime thriller Ratsasan had to provide, Aaryan is a film which talks about a serial killer who targets himself as his first victim and reveals that more murders are to take place in the coming days. But how?

Before the release of Aaryan, there were many comparisons to Ratsasan, a critically acclaimed crime thriller which featured Vishnu Vishal. Apart from the fact that both the films show the actor playing a cop probing a serial killer case, the makers had said that there is no connection.
In Aaryan, we begin to see a disgruntled writer Narayanan aka Alagar (Selvaraghavan) walk into the sets of a live television show before taking the audience and anchor as hostages. Before expressing about how the world failed him as writer and that he decided to make world his stage and create his ‘perfect crime story’ using the people around him as characters, Alagar announces that five murders are to take place in the next five days and that he will reveal the name of the victim one hour before the murder is to take place. Nambi (Vishnu Vishal) is put in charge of this case, which only gets murkier after Alagar shoots himself on the sets, making himself his first victim.
After the suicide of Alagar, Nambi is put in charge of the case which does not seem to have any lead. However, a little probe into Alagar’s life and his behaviour on the sets of the live show, Nambi gets to know that he is a loner, introvert, and that he did not get along with his son. But even as Nambi appears to be one step ahead of the dead Alagar, the plan to murder five people in the next five days, gets broadcasted to the public. Even as Nambi tries to stop these murders, Nambi only becomes a witness to each murder and reaches the spot only after a few minutes after the person has died.
Nambi begins to find a pattern between the murders, if Alagar is targeting loners like him, or elderly men who are abandoned by their families. But the pattern breaks when a young dancer is killed on stage while she performing onstage, followed by a young environmental activist who is murdered while diving for underwater protest, inside the sea, and a widow who goes to offer prayers to her husband’s grave.
Through the probe, Nambi understands that Alagar had gone through months of observations to know the routines of his victims and what they do when. Using their routines to his benefit, he had planned and orchestrated the plans that would make the murders take place even if he is not there. As Nambi concludes that he is a ‘perfect criminal’, he comes to know that Alagar had directed his earnings from royalty fees of his books to charity organisations, which directly connect to each cause that his victims were connected to. With this cue, Nambi predicts that the last victim is someone who voices out for women and their rights. The police also realise that the first names of each victims if coined together comes to ‘Aaryan’ as they zero on Nambi being the last victim, given he is a loner, was a politically active student, and that part of the police department to which Alagar’s royalty earnings go. At the same time, Nambi also stumbles upon the basement sketch plan for Alagar through his diary.
Nambi manages to deduce that Alagar’s final victim will be at Alagar’s basement and races against time to reach there. He finds a basement that leads to Alagar’s operating venue. Witnessing Alagar’s final video, Nambi learns that it is 10-year plan of Alagar. He also gets trapped in a glass cubicle which gets filled with water, but saves himself last minute. But it is at this time, the police realise that a transwoman and women’s rights activist Nalini has gone missing. Nambi saves Nalini who is trapped inside the same basement.
Concluding the film, Nambi reveals that all the victims who died, were all doing jobs that were important to the society, but were failed to be appreciated. Including Alagar who was a writer, a nurse, dancer, military man, and activist, among the other victims, their thankless jobs went unnoticed and under appreciated by society. Alagar noticed this, got in touch with them, observed them, and targeted them. Subsequently, he plotted and killed them while they were doing what they loved doing the most; like the dancer on stage, and activist while sea diving. They conclude that Alagar’s motive to kill these people, so that the country’s attention turns towards them, thus making their martyrs whose works had to be respected. An ‘eccentric and weird logic’ the film concludes with some food for thought to think about the importance and respect for every occupation.
