Coolie, the recently released action thriller starring Rajinikanth in the lead role, is now running in theatres. The film, which carried the weight of heavy expectations, did not satisfy fans. Even as the film took a good opening at the box office, Coolie began to see a dip and so far, has made Rs 216 crore in India, as per reports.

After directing films like Leo, Vikram, and Master, director Lokesh Kanagaraj teamed up with Rajinikanth for Coolie. Though the film was announced as not part of the LCU, the hype surrounding the collaboration was high. But the release of the film and reception were completely different.

Upon its release, Coolie received negative reviews and did not fare well among the critics. As per Sacnilk, the film's box office collection on day 7 stands at Rs 216 crore. Even as the film released for the Independence Day long weekend, and had capitalised on it, Coolie eventually began to see a dip from the first Monday, and the collection numbers have not been favourable. However, Coolie is still the top grosser of Tamil cinema in 2025 so far.

Coolie makers challenge court for A certificate

It is also to be noted that Coolie has been certified A, making it suitable only for those above 18 years to watch. Coolie, which came at the time when Rajinikanth is celebrating 50 years in the industry, had been given A certificate by the CBFC board. The producers of Coolie have challenged the court, requesting the film to be given a U/A certificate and cited that when films like Beast and KGF with much violence were given a U/A certificate, Coolie too should have the same certification.
