Jeethu Joseph, who shot to national fame with his Drishyam in 2013, spoke about how the idea for the thriller film was sparked over a casual conversation with his friends when he had not even entered the cinema. The Neru director revealed that a friend recalled an instance involving a young boy and girl, and how there was right and wrong on both their sides. He thought of this as a courtroom drama, but at this point, the film did not have the mind-blowing climax revolving around a police station.

“It looked insipid and I dropped it. Then mobile phones and the misuse became prevalent. Later, an associate gave me a characterisation of a theatre operative and I incorporated that character in this script. The climax was not like this, there was no police station or murder. Then the title for the movie was Thirasheelayude Maravil. The associate could not make it into a film, and it came back to me. But I dropped that characterisation, even then the police station was not there. That I got quite accidentally, while playing shuttle. But it took 10 years from the first thought to getting to the script, which I eventually directed,” Jeethu Joseph told the Malayalam news channel.
In the Jeethu Joseph-helmed film, Mohanlal plays Georgekutty, who runs a cable TV in a small Kerala town. The trouble begins when Varun, the son of a top cop, harasses his daughter and gets killed in his house premises. Georgekutty hides the dead body even as the police hound him and his family, but are unable to find the corpse to prove the crime. In the climax, it is revealed that Georgekutty had buried the corpse beneath the police station.
