Not just in Tamil Nadu, the young rom-com film has caught the attention of audiences in Kerala too. But as Dude's popularity increases by the day, Malayali netizens have found a hilarious link to a 2002 Dileep film, Kalyanaraman, which they claim has the ‘story’ for the 2025 Tamil film in a nutshell. Kalyanaraman is a 2002 Malayalam comedy film, which starred actors Dileep and Navya Nair, along with an ensemble cast with the likes of Kunchacko Boban, Innocent, and Salim Kumar. For the past few days, a particular reel from Kalyanaraman has been doing the rounds on social media with the caption ‘Dude in a nutshell’.

The particular scene revolves around Innocent’s popular character Ponjikkara explaining the love triangle situation. Giving an example, he asks if one person loves your wife, and the wife also likes the other person, will you let your wife get married to him?

What’s the plot of Dude?

Dude narrates the tale of Agan and Kural, who have been close since childhood, with Kural developing feelings for Agan, who rejects her initially. But when Agan falls for Kural, she is in love with another man. Agan gets ‘married’ to Kural, but agrees to reunite her with her lover. Malayalam actress Mamitha Baiju plays the lively Kural, while Pradeep Ranganathan once again brings his goofy character alive with Agan in the Keerthiswaran directorial.

In Kalyanaraman too, Ramankutty (Dileep) and Gowri (Navya Nair) are in love and want to get married, but her cousin Unni also likes her and she also once had feelings for him. But the film brings in a family curse as the twist. The 2002 film helmed by Shafi is known for its witty banter between characters and comedy situations that are still popular. Innocent’s Ponjikkara character has a separate fan base and is a regular on social media memes with the ‘Dude in a nutshell’ being the latest.
