Hridayapoorvam: Did Mohanlal just drop major hint about Sathyan Anthikad directorial?

Hridayapoorvam, one of the Onam releases of 2025, sees Mohanlal and Sathyan Anthikad reunite after a decade. The actor explains the gap and what sets their latest film apart

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and director Sathyan Anthikad have had a 4 decade-long working relationship, a time in which they collaborated on gems like TP Balagopalan MA, Sanmanasullavarkku Samadhanam , Gandhinagar 2nd Street and many others. After their 2015 film Ennum Eppozhum, though, it took them exactly a decade to work together again. Hridayapoorvam, which will be in theatres for Onam 2025 on August 28 is that film, which Sathyan has directed, based on a story by his son, Akhil.

Hridayapoorvam to be Sathyan Anthikad's last film?

Ahead of the film’s release, Mohanlal has begun its promotions, during which he was asked about his long-standing association with the filmmaker. One statement that the actor made has got netizens wondering. Speaking to Mathrubhumi News about the excitement of collaborating yet again with Sathyan, Mohanlal said that he’s had the great fortune of being a part of Sathyan’s first film (Kurukkante Kalyanam) as well as his last, which has sparked speculation that the filmmaker will hang up his boots after Hridayapoorvam.

“It’s been 40 years since Sathyettan and I began to do films together. I have been a part of his first and last films, even though there was a gap when we could not work together,” said Mohanlal, explaining that the 10-year gap between Ennum Eppozhum and Hridayapoorvam happened because he was busy with other projects most of the time, while Sathyan had cut down on the frequency of filmmaking massively. Sathyan has done only three other films between Ennum Eppozhum and Hridayapoorvam.

Mohanlal adds that what is amazing about their latest film is that the filmmaker has made a movie that is vastly different from all of their other collaborations. That, says the actor, is mainly because a lot of the actors that Sathyan was known to frequently work with are no more. But more importantly, the filmmaker has been able to adapt to a new thought process in cinema, instead of sticking to old-school formats.

“The team that Sathyettan worked with was new for him, including the cinematographer and the locations that the film was shot at, including Pune, was a first for him. The subject he chose to tell, the music and songs; everything is new, and what is interesting is that not many would dare to pick up a story like this,” says Mohanlal.
