Jana Nayagan makers cite Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar 2 release date: ‘Not a practice to wait for certificate’

Tamil star Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan, continues to be entangled in a legal tussle. The H Vinoth directorial did not get a respite from the Madras High Court, which reserved its orders. The court hearing on Tuesday saw the makers of the Vijay film contend strongly for the Tamil movie, pointing out that it was not a practice to wait for a censor certificate before announcing the release date and even cited the example of Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar 2.

Why did Jana Nayagan makers cite Dhurandhar 2 in Madras HC hearing

The Madras High Court on January 20 took up the case of the Jana Nayagan-CBFC row, which has been hogging national headlines. During the nearly 5-hour hearing, senior advocate Satish Parasaran, who represented the makers KVN Productions, contended that the film’s further delay would cause more losses and put even the OTT deal in jeopardy. Jana Nayagan was announced as a Pongal release, with the film set to hit theatres on January 9, 2026. The makers had announced the release date before they received the censor certificate, and the delay in getting it had led to the film being postponed indefinitely.

Explaining to the court that it is not a practice for the film’s makers to announce the release date only after getting the certificate, the senior counsel gave the example of Dhurandhar 2 from Bollywood. The Hindi film, starring Ranveer Singh, has already announced its release date as March 19, 2026.

“In 22 countries, we have received approval. It's not a practice to wait for certificate to announce money. If you see Bollywood, they have already announced Durandhar 2,” Parasaran was quoted as saying by Live Law. With the Madras High Court reserving its order on Tuesday, the Jana Nayagan release date continues to be in the dark, leaving the fans of Thalapathy Vijay disappointed.

On the other hand, the Hindi film Dhurandhar which released in theatres on December 5, has become a roaring success, smashing box office records. Amid this, the makers announced the release date of the sequel to Dhurandhar, which is helmed by Aditya Dhar. The film is yet to receive certification as well.
