The Tamil movie Jana Nayagan, which is actor Vijay’s final film, continues to be embroiled in legal tussles over the censor certificate. The Madras High Court has set aside the single bench’s order, which had directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue the certificate for the Vijay film, as per Live Law. With the Madras HC verdict, there is still no clarity on when the Jana Nayagan movie will release, which was initially set for a January 9 release.

What’s Madras High court verdict on Jana Nayagan

The Madras High Court, which held a lengthy hearing on Jana Nayagan-CBFC row on January 20 last week, was set to pronounce the verdict in the keenly-followed case on January 27 morning. However, the Madras HC division bench, led by Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan, on Tuesday sent back the case to the single bench, which had earlier ruled in favour of the movie. But setting aside the previous order, the HC division bench has directed the single bench to hear the case afresh, and also allowed the CBFC to file a fresh plea.

When will Jana Nayagan release

With the Madras High Court’s latest verdict, it is clear that the Jana Nayagan movie release would be further delayed. There is no immediate report on when the single bench will take up the case. Only after the legal issue is resolved and the CBFC issues the censor certificate to the Thalapathy Vijay movie can Jana Nayagan be released in theatres.

Jana Nayagan was scheduled to release in theatres on January 9, 2026, as the big Pongal release. The makers had declared the release date before getting the CBFC certificate, an issue that was raised in court. However, the makers had contended that this was a practice, citing examples of even Bollywood movies such as Dhurandhar 2.

Directed by H Vinoth, the film also features Hindi actor Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, and Mamitha Baiju in key roles, along with actor-filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani.

The other Tamil film, Parasakthi, was released on January 10. Actor Sivakarthikeyan leads the film, which also opened to mixed reviews.

If Jana Nayagan fails to release in February also, it could spell further trouble for Vijay's political action drama as the state assembly elections are likely to be announced in Tamil Nadu, in which the actor's party TVK is set to contest.
