Kothalavadi, a village drama starring Pruthvi Ambaar, Gopalkrishna Deshpande, Rajesh Nataranga, Kavya Shaiva, among others, hit theatres only a week after the Kannada comedy Su From So began taking the box office by storm. One of 4 Kannada film releases in the first week of August, Kothalavadi struggled to find good screens/shows and audiences. Kothalavadi was produced by actor Yash’s mother, Pushpa Arunkumar, who alleged that her film was deliberately targeted by the distributor, whose production venture was still in theatres.

Kothalavadi headed to Prime Video

Despite the film’s poor theatrical performance, Pushpa has managed to sell the streaming rights, revealing during a recent promotional event of the Telugu film Ghaati, which she is distributing in Karnataka, that Amazon Prime Video is the OTT partner of Kothalavadi. Since the film is already past the 30-day from theatrical release mark, it should drop on the streamer shortly. A release date is yet to be confirmed.

Directed by Sriraj, Kothalavadi is about a debt-ridden riverside village, whose residents resort to sand mining from the river to get them out of trouble, only to find that they’ve dug themselves into a deeper hole. While the film was marketed as Pruthvi Ambaar starrer, it is Gopalkrishna Deshpande who walks away with the juiciest part.

In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Pruthvi Ambaar had spoken about the need to find theatrical success and establish himself as a marketable hero, all of which is yet to materialize for the actor. He will next be seen in Chowkidaar, a film in which he is joined by veteran actor Saikumar. Pruthvi is also set to turn director with a Tulu film, which will go on floors in September.
