The Coolie phase is finally over. The film has hit theatres and had its own shares of disappointment. And with that, the Tamil cinema is continuing with its fair share of failures this year. While star-studded films have not been that bright after all this year, the show goes on, and some interesting releases are lined up later this month and next. Here are some of the weekend watches you can binge on.

Thalaivan Thalaivii – Prime Video (August 22)

Thalaivan Thalaivii is a Tamil romantic family drama featuring Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen in the lead roles. The film is helmed by Pandiraaj and is soon to stream on Prime Video. It follows the lives of two headstrong individuals Arasi and Agasaveeran. After the latter gatecrashes the tonsure ceremony of their daughter, the story reveals how the couple first met, got married, and what sorrows followed their marital life. The ensemble cast of Thalaivan Thalaivii includes Chemban Vinod, RK Suresh, Kaali Venkat, Mynaa Nandhini, Yogi Babu and others.

Maareesan – Netflix (August 22)

Maareesan is a road-trip thriller drama with a slow-burn take. Headlined by actors Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu, Maareesan is about a petty thief who breaks open into a house only to find an old man who claims to be suffering from Alzheimer’s. With the motive to rob him off his money, the thief obliges the old man’s request to drop him in another town, only to realise the latter’s own schemes coming to the fore. The film is directed by Sudheesh Sankar with script by Krishna Moorthy.

Indra – Theatres (August 22)

Indra is a Tamil thriller which stars Vasanth Ravi in the lead role. It is expected to be a horror thriller and marks the directorial debut of filmmaker Sabarish Nanda. Telugu actor Sunil, Anikha Surendaran, and Mehreen Pirzada are also part of the cast.
