Directed and written by Dominic Arjun, the Lokah plot follows Chandra as she moves to the city but makes enemies with an evil cop who is part of an organ trafficking ring. Chandra also finds an admirer in the neighbourhood lad Sunny (Naslen) who seeks to rescue her from the goons, but soon realise that she is no ordinary woman. The rest of the film narrates Chandra’s origin tale of Kalliyankattu Neeli (yakshi or vampire from Malayalam folklore), and introduces others like her!
With animated visuals, the Lokah opening credits narrate the tale of the supreme figure Mother, who sends Moothon (The Elder voiced by Mammootty) to harvest energy. Moothon lands on Earth, enlightens humans about various power sources and seeks to protect them from Mother. As per one fan theory, Mother then sends her daughter Ishtar to the Earth to bring back Moothon, but they get into a conflict. Ishtar, ancient goddess of war and love, is widely being believed to be the arch-nemesis of Moothon. The opening credits ends with a space ship crashing into the ocean.
Chandra, who is actually Kaliyankattu Neeli, gets infected by the virus that gave her superpowers in a cave which also had a headless statue of what looked like a woman warrior. The head was lying next to the statue, and as the young Neeli touches it, she gets bitten by a flock of bats but she overcomes the virus infection to attain superhuman powers. Is the statue that of Ishtar and does the head being severed from the body hint Moothon’s triumph over Ishtar.
The film’s opening scenes also hint that Moothon and Chandra may have had a difference of opinion but Nishanth Sagar’s Prakash assuring her that she is still like a daughter to The Elder. The idea of a powerful female villain in Malayalam’s first woman superhero film also deserves to put the spotlight on Lokah co-writer Santhy Balachandran.
Lokah has not one but two post-credit sequences. The first one featured Dulquer Salmaan, who also took the responsibility of first producing the film, appears as the sword-wielding Charlie or Odiyan (another character from Malayalam folklore). DQ’s Charlie is slated to lead another Chapter of Lokah, but the second one will be about Tovino Thomas’ goofy Chathan (Micheal).
The second Lokah post-credit sequence shows Chathan being told about a mysterious cave where a group of archaeologists go missing after entering it with a monk, who alone returned. The monk had warned the rest of the group from proceeding after a point, and the only evidence they got is a photo of a rugged man who has stark similarities to Micheal. But Chathan tells that he as many as 389 siblings who all look like him. Lokah Chapter 1 ends there for sure but what caught our attention is that the cave where the archaeologists vanished could be the one where Chandra got infected as well, clearly showing a thread that connects the Moothon-Ishtar tale to Neeli and Chathan.
