The teaser and trailer of the upcoming Kannada film Nidradevi Next Door both pointed towards it being about the struggles of the protagonist who suffers from insomnia. Praveer Shetty (of Siren fame), who plays the lead in the film, though, says that insomnia is only a minor arc in the story. “The core of the film is a solid love drama,” he says, adding that his rivalry with the character played by Shine Shetty is an equally important part of the story.

Praveer plays a cricketer in Nidradevi Next Door, whose insomnia is triggered by a certain trauma. What that is and whether or not he is able to deal with it is also in the narrative, but it his relationship with the heroine, played by Rishika Nayak that is central, he explains. “There is an emotional journey to how he overcomes his trauma,” he says.

Nidradevi Next Door, meanwhile, was pitched to Praveer during a rough patch in his life and became just what he was looking for to bounce back. Initially, the story was slightly different from what they have now got ready to present to audiences. Writer and director Suraag Sagar and Praveer had multiple discussions about the story and made certain course corrections for the betterment of the film.

The actor and Rishika then spent 6 months in pre-production workshops, focusing primarily on 5-6 major scenes in the film that they rehearsed to perfection before going on floors. Once the first copy of the film was ready, the team showed it to a focus group consisting of individuals from different walks of life and the response, says Praveer, was encouraging. “They found the climax, especially, very moving, and the credit of that goes to Suraag,” he says.
