The second single from Darshan Thoogudeepa’s The Devil has been released and this time around, Onde Ondu Sala is a romantic number picturized on the Kannada superstar and leading lady Rachana Rai. It’s a lyrical video with only fleeting glimpses from the actual video, but the little that one gets to see of the lead actors, it is clear that Darshan is in great form, and while Rachana also looks good, going by her styling and the choreography, this song is more about being the glamour quotient for her.

Lead pair look good, but there's no chemistry

Composed by B Ajaneesh Loknath, with vocals by Kapil Kapilan (of Sapta Sagaradaache Ello fame), and Chinmayi, and lyrics by Pramod Maravanthe, Onde Ondu Sala is a stylishly picturised romantic number, although the lead pair’s chemistry is not really palpable. The composition is a mix of a soothing melody and peppy dance number and doesn’t have the instant appeal of, say, Kannu Hodiyaka from Roberrt, but has the potential to become an earworm with repeat listens.

The Devil is Darshan’s second collaboration with director Prakash Veer (Milana Prakash), after Tarak. The film was meant to the actor’s 2024 Christmas release, but when he got arrested in the Renukaswamy case, all plans went haywire. He completed the film while out on bail, but has been incarcerated again, as he awaits trial. It was initially thought that the team would wait it out till he’s out again, but market dynamics dictate otherwise.

The Devil will be in theatres on December 12 and while no other major release has been announced for the date, it comes only a week after Ranveer Singh’s much-awaited Durandhar and a week before Avatar: Fire and Ash. The Christmas weekend has been taken up by not one but two Kannada films, including Kiccha Sudeep’s Mark and Shivarajkumar’s 45. The Devil will get a 2-week largely unperturbed run.

Q. Why was Darshan arrested?

A. Darshan was arrested on June 11, 2024 in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case. 35-year-old Renukaswamy was tortured to death for allegedly sending lewd messages to Darshan's alleged partner of many years, Pavitra Gowda and at his behest, the former was brought to Bengaluru, where he was beaten up and later succumbed to his injuries. Pavitra is accused number 1, while Darshan is accused number 2.

Q. When was Darshan given bail?

A. Darshan was granted interim medical bail in late November claiming he needed surgical intervention for a bad back issue. He was then granted regular bail by the High Court in mid-December, the circumstances of which have been questioned by the Supreme Court, which, on August 14, 2025, 8 months later, cancelled his bail.
