Parvathy Thiruvothu on her bitter experience on Dhanush's Maryan set: ‘I had to tell them I am on my period’

Malayalam actress Parvathy Thiruvothu has always been vocal about the issues that plague women on film sets, which, up until recently, were mostly brushed under the carpet. The Storm actress recently spoke about how the male-dominated film sets are mostly unaware of the troubles faced by women. During an interview with Hauterrfly, she cited the example of her experience of working on Dhanush’s Tamil film Maryan while she was on her period.

Maryan is a 2013 Tamil film, which stars Dhanush and Parvathy Thiruvothu, set in a coastal village. During the recent interview, Parvathy recounted her experience of doing romantic scenes in Maryan while getting drenched.

“The first day of the shoot was me getting completely drenched in water and being romanced by the hero. And they were pouring water on me. I haven't carried any change. I don’t have an entourage of people taking care of me or anything, and at one point, I had to go and tell him that ‘listen, I need to go back to the hotel, change and come’. But they were like ‘No, no, we don't have time’ and I had to loudly tell them that I am on my period and I have to. And they had no idea how to respond to that,” the Wonder Women actress recounted. Maryan was directed by Bharat Bala.

Parvathy further pointed out how women are grossly outnumbered on film sets as Maryan just had three females with the men would come up to around 50. While pointing out that this is not just restricted to Tamil cinema, the actress said it was similar in Malayalam as well.

“Most of the Malayalam films have very few women on set. So I am very happy when I see more women on sets,” said the actress, who has won a National Award Special Mention for her performance in the film Take Off. Her upcoming projects include the thriller series Storm, backed by Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan.
