What's the plot of Rang De Basanti

Rang De Basanti (2006) is a critically acclaimed Indian drama directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. It follows a British filmmaker, Sue, who casts a group of cynical Indian university students to act in her documentary about freedom fighters. While depicting revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh, the students are transformed, leading them to fight the corruption of the modern government.

Sue comes to India to document her grandfather’s diaries about British police in the 1920s. She hires a group of friends (DJ, Karan, Sukhi, Aslam, and Sonia) for the roles. Initially indifferent and disillusioned with India, the students began to reflect the emotions of the revolutionaries in their roles. Their attitudes changed as they connected with the history of sacrifice.

The group’s friend, Air Force pilot Ajay (R. Madhavan) dies in a MiG crash. The government blames him for negligence in covering up a corrupt defence deal, sparking outrage in the friends. Reflecting the revolutionaries, the group took direct action, assassinating the corrupt defence minister. They then seized a radio station to explain their intentions, leading to deadly clashes with the police. This film bridges the gap between the past and the present, calling on young people to take personal responsibility for social change.
