Su From So OTT and satellite rights sold? Raj B Shetty clarifies

On August 20, there was a report that the hit Kannada film Su From So’s digital and satellite rights had been sold for a record price.

Su From So, the blockbuster Kannada film that literally took the box office by storm and made over Rs 100 crore in its 25 days in theatres so far, has reportedly finalized its OTT and satellite partners. On August 20, it was reported that Su From So, produced by filmmaker-actor Raj B Shetty and directed by JP Thuminad, had been picked up by Colors Kannada and JioHotstar for the satellite and digital rights for Rs 5.5 cr. This, it was said, would give JioHotstar the streaming rights for the film in all the south languages.

When we checked in with Raj about this deal, he was quick to say, “This is not right” and added that nothing has been finalized as far as OTT and TV deals go. It was earlier thought that Su From So would likely go to Amazon Prime Video, since two of Raj’s more recent films – Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye and Roopanthara - were on the platform. The success of Su From So has, no doubt, given Raj and his team bargaining power and it would be interesting to see which platform gives them the sweetest deal eventually.

After its 4th weekend at the Karnataka box office, Su From So is finally slowing down, registering under Rs 1 crore collections two days in a row, a first since the release date. It’s been rumoured that the film will be on OTT on or before 30-days from release, but that, say insiders is unlikely, given that it is still drawing audiences to theatres. The film, which was dubbed in Malayalam, has had a decent run in Kerala, which is expected to peter out closer to when the Onam releases hit theatres in the state next week.

The Telugu dubbed version, meanwhile, did not have a similar reception, while Hindi and Tamil were not even attempted. There are reports that a Tamil remake is likely, but Raj’s never been a fan of that culture, given that the film’s he makes are rooted in particular cultures. Su From So, for instance, is a story set in Mangaluru.
